Any way you can
As my uncle who served in World War II as a combat infantryman put it, "In the middle of a war,
you'll get a bath any way you can." This GI is using a jerry can and his helmet.
Does anyone know if US soldiers are still comfortable stripping to bathe and swim under such conditions? I'm thinking of Iraq and Afghanistan. I know they don't strip naked anymore when taking induction physicals. It was a bit surprising to see individual shower stalls in that one shot.
I've see a few pictures of US soldiers fooling around naked in the places you mention. Looked like a gag, as opposed to something they might routinely have done.
I love these photos of soldiers you so kindly share with us, Jerry! This one particularly caught my eye, and I'll tell you why. The soldier's very hairy legs are extraordinary, along with his smile. He must have enjoyed washing himself. The conditions couldn't have been easy, not even having a small basin, forcing him to use his helmet. Even though shower stalls are visible in the background, as Big Dude points out, there must have been a water outage or rationing.
