The Bartender


I'm closing today's series with a painting from 1958.  It's called The Bartender, and all the patrons 
appear to be men.  Yes, there were gay bars in New York City in 1958.

  1. Looks like one of the private gay basement bars ubiquitous in NYC at that time. Or it could be Julius’ the oldest gay bar in NYC, other gay bars in the 1950’s were the Mayfair and Club 82….:)

  2. I watched the movie Stonewall the other night, I salute the men and women of those times and the indignities they had to go through. They were a tough lot though, I hope we never see something similar in these trying times.
