Classical vibe
I get a Classical vibe from this one. Must be the staff.
This is Anton (or Anthony) Matysek. This photo was the cover for Strength Magazine, May 1917. Published by the Milo Bar-Bell Company. The pose is named "The Resting Gladiator." The whole issue (24 pages) has been uploaded by our friends at the Stark Center, and can be seen at: https://archives.starkcenter.org/omeka/files/original/78e8ab2e7fd412e6f2c96ff8f304c597.pdf
More photos of Matysek in weight lifing poses are on pages 11 and 13, and there is a discussion of his lifting techniques on pages 12-13.
A point of interest: there are other weight lifters discussed, with their photos (many in jockstrap only). All of these men were into the Physical Culture movement.
These guys are so handsome! Wondering how they got recruited.
ReplyDeleteSome of these men were part of the 1890-1910 physical culture movement influenced by Prof. Desbonnet, and being photographed was fairly common.
DeleteAnd the gentleman is extremely pleasant looking.
ReplyDeleteI thought so, too.
DeleteBeautiful pose. Looks so natural. bns
