Barton Mumaw

The only derriere shot in today's set is of Barton Mumaw, a dancer of great skill
who worked with Ted Shawn for years.  It was while associated with Mr. Shawn
that Earle Forbes' photographic career really got under way.

  1. I've seen video of him dancing. Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire have nothing on him, they would be embarrassed!

    1. Gene Kelly looked great in motion, but his style was more muscular than graceful, imho.

    2. Mumaw was the main inspiration for dancers such as Gregg Burge and Cynthia Rhodes. Fluidity in motion. Both made it seem so effortless thanks to him.

  2. One of the troupe of Ted Shawn’s male dancers. Mumaw was at one time the lover of Ted Shawn at Shawn’s famed Jacob’s Pillow. Mumaw served in Ww2 in special services, entertaining the troops with dance. Were the army brass upset when Mumaw danced in character as a Native American in a loincloth with nothing on underneath at one dance recital ! After the war, Mumaw went on tour and did much to preserve the dance legacy of Ted Shawn.
