"In just seven days, I can make you a man." Those immortal lyrics sung by Dr. Frankenfurter in Rocky Horror paraphrased one of Charles Atlas' phenomenally successful ads promoting his Dynamic Tension method of bodybuilding. So yes, friends, it's Charles Atlas Day on the old blog. "Would you mail this coupon to get a body like mine?" Damn right, I would! Sign me up.

What is "Mail"?
ReplyDeleteSomething my insurance company keeps sending me despite multip;e requests to go digital only.

DeleteHe was born Angelo Siciliano, and is a distant in-law: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Siciliano-73
ReplyDeleteCharles died on Christmas Eve 1972 at age 80.
ReplyDeleteI saw a head shot of him at age 28….. absolutely gorgeous!
He looked good pretty much at any stage of his life, although I haven't seen any of his childhood photos. Multiple biographers say that he was a sickly chilld, hence the quest for physical development.
DeleteI remember his ads in the back of comics and the muscle mags. Like the 90 pound weakling getting kicked with sand by a beach bully, getting the dynamic tension course of Atlas, building his body up and getting even with the beach bully….:)
ReplyDeleteMr. Atlas was bullied as a youngster, so we know where this particular part of the pitch came from.
DeleteThe beach bully was HOT. 🥵
