Yannis Tsarouchis Day

Greek artist Yannis Tsarouchis (1910-1989) was best known for his paintings of Greek sailors, 

and that's mostly what we will see today.  I am, however, including a few other types for variety.  

We begin with a different version of a sailor painting that I posted over six years ago.

 

Prometheus

This is Prometheus from 1965, and it looks damaged.

 

No title

I don't have a title for this one, but my source says it is from Mr. Tsarouchis' sailor period.

 

Man Dancing

Here we see Man Dancing from 1967.

 

David

David (1974) is utterly G-rated, but pretty nice none-the-less.

I get a feeling that the artist had a personal relationship with the model.

 

Reclining sailor

The settee that this model posed on appears several times in Mr. Tsarouchis work.

 

The Bouquet

The Bouquet was painted in 1955.  For some reason, 

the models kept their shoes and socks on.

 

1957

The only information I have on this one is the year, 1957.

I wish I knew what those spiked obects were.

 

Vision of David

This the guy in this painting, Vision of David, the same David we saw earlier in this set?

 

More spikes

Ending the set with another painting using those spikes as a prop.

Gay Ads Day

Today I'm featuring some gay ads over the decades, starting with this one for the Club Baths' 

Buddy Day.  If you didn't arrive with a buddy, you probably would find one shortly.

 

Black Flag

This is an ad for the gay friendly punk bank Black Flag.

 

Gay American Gothic

The Hayloft in Studio City did an American Gothic themed ad.

 

Poppers

Not the healthiest concept, but poppers ads could be interesting.

 

Remodelers

Remodelers Burrill and Robin used a Calafran photo to promote their business.

I wonder if anyone insisted that they work nude as advertised?

 

Cross-Your-Crotch

Was this one a joke?  Instead of Cross-Your-Heart bras by Playtex,

they are pusing Cross-Your-Crotch jockstraps by Playthings.

 

Lube

The guy who modeled for this Lube ad probably needed the large economy size.

 

Uncle Paul's

Uncle Paul's was on Christopher Street in the Village.

 

Bear Night at the Baths

The Bubbles Men Only bath house had a Bear Night with, naturally, a free buffet.

 

The Zipper

And lastly, we have an ad for a place called The Zipper.

 

Muybridge GIFs

Some time ago I promised you all a series of Muybridge's motion studies actually in motion.  So today we will look at ten GIFs, starting with this baseball player whom you might have seen before.  The difference today is that we have two views of the same action side by side.

 

Running man

We can actually see the muscles flexing in this running man.

 

Wood Chopper

This wood chopper is the first of three GIFs in today's set that may be Muybridge himself.

Mel Roberts Day

Our series today features the work of Mel Roberts, a photographer who came into his own 

in the closing days of the posing strap era.  He is perhaps best known for his extensive use 

of color, and all the pictures in today's set are examples of his color work.

We start the show with Keith Clayton ankle deep in water.

 

Joey Richards

Mr. Roberts photographed Joey Richards on a waterfall viewing platform.

Sometimes it's the details that make a photo work.

These two are Rick Johnson and Sam Evans.

 

Steve Desmond

The grass and even the tree on this California hillside look almost dead.

Steve Desmond, however, looks very much alive.

 

Tad Bennett

This 1968 photo of Brand Davidson makes me wonder if Mel Roberts borrowed Bruce Bellas' ranchito for a photo shoot.  Of course there were plenty of other ranches in California at the time.
