This photo of World War II German recruits was a viewer favorite on my old tumblr nine years ago.
In the book I'm writing, I have a drawing of a medical examination at the recruitment center for military service. I was there in 1977. They made us strip completely naked, and the doctors looked at the soles of our feet to see if we had flat feet. The doctors were military men like us and must have had a good laugh seeing all these young guys naked. Some were very embarrassed and tried to cover themselves with their hands. Of course, those were the ones the doctors asked to put their hands on their heads so they could examine their armpits! It was torture for the shy ones because everyone was laughing. Since I was very tall, I was taken aside from the group so that two doctors could measure different parts of my body. I didn't care; they thought they were making me uncomfortable, but they weren't, and the measurements were quickly and carelessly done.
