I used this photo of Ray Christopher in the early days of my old tumblr blog,
and it remains one of my personal favorites by Dave Martin.

    1. Yes, there are all sorts of variations on those, and some only seem to appear when the model is "clenching."

    2. Ray Christopher posed for Dave Martin in 1953. Did anyone ever figure out if he was a College Jock or a Body Builder or what he did for a living? It appears Martin did not leave notes on that.

    3. I've tried for years to find out more about this model without success. He apparently did a single, and quite exquisite, photo shoot with Dave Martin and then disappeared. FWIW, he looks to me more like the college boy type than a bodybuilder.

    4. The Stanford Archive indicates Dave Martin took 13 B&W Photos of Ray Christopher in 1953. I have seen the 3 you have posted plus I have Ray holding a Bow and another holding a Beach Ball. So 5 total and I have 8 more to locate. I had hope that in my search I would find other photos with more information about Ray by the blogger or website selling his photo. So far no luck. Ray really seemed to vanish and yes he does look like a college Man.!!

    5. The Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art in NYC has a Photo of Ray Christopher on display. The Caption for the display reads "Ray Christopher - 1953, Stanford University Wrestling". I just learned this today and wanted to let you know. You were right he was College in this case Stanford and a Wrestler.!!

    6. Thanks for the details. It all makes sense, particularly given that Stanford was one of the most frequent origins for the young men in Dave Martin's stable of models.

    7. The Leslie-Lohman Museum has an original Dave Martin Photo of Ray Christopher that you have posted on your site already. He is standing by the Lake nothing in his arms. I did find several Vintage sites that mistakenly call him "Christopher Ray" which adds more confusion to this.
