There's probably some Classical reference here, but I don't know what it is.
I believe that is a photo from Ted Shawn's dancing school in the 1920's in Los Angeles (Denishawn). He was the husband of Ruth St. Denis, the famous early 20th century dancer. I think it was probably a lavender marriage.
