Four men here are playing Bezique, a popular card game of the time. One is watching intently while another is snoozing on the settee. We get charming and strongly masculine all at once.

Cezanne painted 5 paintings of men playing cards. His paintings may have inspired Caillebotte to paint his card players.

ReplyDeleteMy grand-père from the Jura often played bésigue. So typical in many homes as the game is played and one man watches and the other man rests.
