Jockstraps - The Early Days

The jockstrap, likely the most popular article of men's apparel on this blog, has been around in its modern form since the 1870s.  (It can be argued that there were much earlier garments of the same purpose, but they were rather different.)  Today we look at some early modern version from the period of 1900 to about 1920.  We start with a very well built male.

  1. I got paddled one time in high school gym for not wearing a strap. Interestingly enough our swimming classes were conducted buck naked. Back then, the Y was mandatorily naked, and college swimming classes as well. I only wore a strp when playing racquetball or flag football, etc.

  2. Goodness, I'm liking those sandals as much as the jock. I first wore one in High School, too. Bought it with my pocket money.

    1. I induced my dad to pay for mine by telling him it was requred for school. Technically it wasn't required, but the coaches would tell the boys who needed one, but didn't wear one, that they should go shopping. They didn't have to tell me.

    2. We weren't allowed to wear our underpants for sport. So it was either no pants, or bringing in a second pair. I remember being told that we could wear a jock, as an alternative, " if we thought we had something protecting". Too embarrassed to ask my mother to buy be a jock, I saved up, and went to a sports shop on the other side of town. I wore it for the first time playing rugby.
