Playgirl

I get a lot of mail and comments from guys whose first real experience with male nude photography was through Playgirl magazine, a publication that pioneered "respectable" male frontal nudity beginning in 1973.  Available in mainstream news stands and even drug stores, this opened a lot of eyes and doors.  We start with Lou Zivkovich, a personal favorite of mine.

  1. Thank you Jerry. I always enjoy the Playgirl photos. As I have said before on this blog, it was men like these that first caught my eye when discovering my sexuality as a teenager in the mid to late 1970s, first in my father’s straight porn magazines and then in Playgirl when I was able to buy it myself from local newsagents.

    1. You're welcome, Phil. I recalled your fondness for these when I chose the theme.

    2. I'm the same. I think mine were reprints in the late 70s rather than Playgirl Magazine. Men like this certainly set my taste in men. I still find men like this attractive.

    3. Yes, it set my taste in men too and I still find men like this attractive. I spoke to a friend who is a psychologist about this and he said we remember the things that made the greatest impression on us, especially if they are positive thoughts and memories. Discovering that I was attracted to men rather than women didn’t always feel positive at the time, but I can look back now with great memories of discovering who I was my father’s magazines and then Playgirl.

  2. In retrospect, what I love about the Playgirl models was that they all had naturally hairy bodies, like men do. As a young, gay man in the 70's everybody just kept their natural body hair. Even porn actors! But it WAS the porn industry that introduced the whole "shaving and pruning" of the male genitalia. I think that this began in the 80's? And it's developed, unfortunately, into an entire lifestyle of "Manscaping" whereas loads of men, both gay and straight, clip and shave their natural body hair. Sort of a pity, but the pendulum seems to be swinging back a little bit, as some men more proudly embrace their "hirsuteness". (If that's even a word...) But I do love these Playgirl posts! And Lou WAS sexy!

    1. You'd think with all the emphasis on "natural" everything in today's popular culture, more men would embrace their body hair. And fwiw, I think the pendulum is coming back our way a bit.

  3. I have to agree with the statements about body hair. A few years ago in the YMCA showers, a "shave cock" made a comment to me about being hairy and not shaving or trimming my groin. I just asked him why he was so ashamed of reaching puberty, and he shut up. I, like you men, dig the hirsute look.
