An artist until the very end, we see Mr. Perlin above working on "Jason" just weeks before he passed away.in January, 2014 at age 95. The unfinished work is below, and below that I have pasted some quotes from his obituary. What an extraordinary man and life!
Bernard Perlin's art is in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago; Ashmolean Museum; Columbus Museum of Art; Detroit Institute of Arts; de Young Museum, San Francisco; Museum of Modern Art; National Academy Museum; National Portrait Gallery; Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Princeton University Art Museum; Smith College Museum of Art; Smithsonian American Art Museum; Tate Modern, London; Virginia Museum of Fine Arts; and the Whitney Museum of American Art
"People always ask me why my paintings are so different they might have been done by several artists," Mr Perlin said "Well, I've gone through many different phases of life - it's been full of changes, so why would I stick to one technique? Many artists decide on one style and they stick to it. Their paintings all look alike. It's boring"
Mr. Perlin is survived by his partner and
husband of 57 years, Edward Newell.
A wonderful artist. My dream would be to find a live model to draw him nude. I only draw from photos and it must be very different when you have a live model to draw from.
ReplyDeleteI hope you get to use a live model someday, Albert. By all accounts, it is the best way.

ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Dee!
DeleteA friend gave me One Man Show for my birthday in 2018 and I immediately felt a connection to the man and his work. What a life, he seems to have been everywhere and done everything. I highly recommend the book, a visual treasure. Thanks Jerry!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Pat, and thanks for recommending the book. I'm headed for Amazon shortly.
