Buzzy Trent
Surfing legend Buzzy Trent (1929-2006) is shown above in 1955. A native of California, he moved to Hawaii at 23 to take on the huge waves on Oahu's North Shore. Below, a cropped head shot.
I had the great fortune almost 20 years ago to be on Oahu during one of the Eddie Aikau championships. Bear and I took a bus to the North Shore because there was nowhere to park for ten miles around the beach. They only have the Eddie when waves are consistently hitting 40 foot faces, and they can't do it every year. It was electrifying to be in the crowd and see what those guys could do. Ten thousand people sang, held hands, and chanted. That day I realized that we here in Hawaii are a nation within a nation at the most isolated spot on the Planet. Fast forward to Covid times, and it all came home again when every morning several TV stations played this version of the Kingdom of Hawai'i national anthem, Hawai'i Pono'i: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qStKa5_G2mo
A true legend. I have seen the documentary Riding Giants and it is breathtaking to watch.

That must have been something to see. And the Aloha Chorus sounded wonderful!
