    1. I'm sure their recruitment numbers went up among a certain element of the population.

    1. Yeah, it's like somebody gay worked in the propaganda poster department. In a few weeks, I'll be posting a series on an American artist who did exactly that.

    1. It's polite to ask . . . and remember to say "please" and "thank you."

  6. There was, so long as you didn't flaunt it, a surprisingly liberal attitude to "activity" . So long as you were discrete and of the same rank. There have been several documentaries, how during WWII, officers would prefer the men so "relieve" each other, instead of going ashore, with the risk of disease and espionage. Men, who were mostly straight, would do it too.

    1. Yes, and I've had several U.S. Navy men tell me there was a lot of "looking the other way" by the higher ups.

    2. It, um, relieves tension! An army mate of mine, told me that it was quite usual for one to focus on some straight porn, whilst another guy would, er do the business for him. No eye contact, nothing ever said..

    3. When I first came out in the 70s, there were guys like that who made occasional appearances in the Austin gay scene. An older friend told me, "When they're desperate and can't get women, they show up here at the bar."
