As many of you know, I have the great pleasure of having worked and become friends with six men from Finnland, so I'm always happy to post a series on their soldiers in the Second World War. Today's set begins (and will end), appropriately enough, with a sauna photo.
Then of course you know that the Finnish sauna is referred to as the "church of nature." What a wonderful cultural heritage!

ReplyDeleteSounds good.
DeleteToday's photos made me wonder if saunas are still popular in Finland. With Google's help I learned there are an estimated 3.5 million saunas in a country with roughly 5.5 million people. They're everywhere in Finland! You can even enjoy a steam in the Helsinki airport terminal. Finnair has not installed them in their airplanes. Well, not yet, at least. 😃
ReplyDeleteMy Finnish co-workers talked our employer into adding a sauna to the Bangkok office block. Of course, there was no snow to jump into afterwards, and the Bangkok weather was often such that all we had to do was walk outdoors to experience the same effect.
DeleteSort of like selling ice machines to Eskimos.
