Professor Desbonnet
This one was made in Professor Desbonnet's Paris physical culture atelier around 1910.
Good question. I think Prof. Desbonnet posed some of his models nude to fully show off the muscles. The few photos of men actively working out from this era that I have seen show them wearing shorts, singlets, or even early jockstraps.
The model is Ernest Cadine (1893-1978), French weightlifter and Olympic gold medalist (Antwerp 1920). He served in an artillery regiment in Ww1. In 1978, just before he died, he received the Ordre National du Merite of France. A life well lived….:)
Jerry, do you know if it was routine for men to work out stripped in those days? Or even acceptable, if not routine? BigDude here

DeleteAs some gentlemen's clubs allowed/required men to exercise nude, I don't see why not.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see photos of those club workouts.
DeleteAnd me.

Thank you! Having previously posted other photos of him, I should have recognized him.
DeleteHe is a gorgeous mesomorph! Probably not very tall but I most certainly would have liked to "trained under him" in his studio!
ReplyDeleteI agree!
DeleteHandsome man with pubes just the way I like them!
ReplyDeleteYes, plenty of bush.
