Wrestler Paul Gregorian, aka Kara Pasha, posed for Crown Studios of Wellington, New Zealand in 1930. The oiling and pose look like the American physique photos of over a decade later.
The photo is in the New Zealand National Library, Wellington Branch.
Great post, great lighting. This is a gem! Thanks, Jerry!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome.
DeleteI don't like pictures of oiled men, but this one is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI don't like heavy oil either, but like you say, this one is special.
DeleteWow, just at the point of the right amount of oil. Gives a great glow.
ReplyDeleteMeant to add. A bit like the Edgar Henry Garland nudes. Also shot in Wellington.
ReplyDeleteThanks for mentioning Mr. Garland's photos. I just found out they are by S. P. Andrew, whose work I will now research.
DeleteCool. See what you can uncover. In some ways, the Garland images could be seen as an extension of tableaux work. I may have mentioned before. My uncle, born about 1912, aged about 17, did a photographic tableau session with his best mate. Ancient Greece theme. Dressed in a sort of smock. Apparently, according to my mother, who was quite a bit younger, this was very popular at the time.
DeleteSo far, it appears that Mr. Garland may have been the only male nude by this photographer. At least it's the only one that shows up in searches. I will keep looking.
DeleteI love this he is just glowing. The right amount of oil gives him a smooth and silky appearance. Today's fave.
ReplyDeleteIn some situations that much oil would be too much, but not this time.
DeleteLumineux portrait, from New Zealand no less. The gentleman appears to be ethnique. The arts of small countries are often ignored to everyone’s detriment.
ReplyDeleteSeveral examples come to mind.
