  2. Red chalk was popular for drawing from the 15th to 18th centuries. Hence what we might think of as an unusual color. Michaelangelo, Da Vinci and Van Gogh used red chalk for their drawings. Artists tend to use charcoal (black) for drawings nowadays.

    1. Thanks for the information. 1900 would be late for red chalk, but that's exactly what it looks like.
