The Ten Commandments? (The tradition of the tablets with rounded tops is entirely the legacy of ecclesiastical artists. In fact, the Talmud tells us that they were rectangular or, rather more oddly, cubes.) There's something a bit ecclesiastical about whatever it is he is holding. Perhaps it's the gilt.
A bit of El Greco here, isn't there? The bright light on his shoulders and pecs brings that out, though the "dark" isn't so dark as El Greco's.

ReplyDeleteI totally get the ecclesiastical thing. If it's supposed the be the Ten Commandments, that's by far the best looking Moses I've seen.
