These are Jockey Skants - a conflation of "scant" and "pants" as in "underpants" - which were launched in 1958 and the first to be marketed as a sports brief and which were extremely popular, being made under licence in both Britain and Australia. Responding to demand, the front and back panels - joined at the hip - were considerably reduced in the early 1960s, making the bikini one of the sheerest and smallest on the market. Joe Leitel is sporting the later design, so we can safely date this image to about 1964.
Thanks for the information. I was given a 1990s film documentary about physique photography for Christmas by a friend, and Joe Leitel is interviewed in it. I haven't had time to watch it yet.
Considering what's showing inside those, too bad for us he had to wear them. Milo took some shots of Leitel in rut...and he looks good!
