Playful pair

I get the feeling these two are just fooling around as opposed to actually being boxers.

  1. I think you nailed it, Jerry. Post gym class, maybe?

  2. Fooling around post gym class, yet someone had a camera at the ready.

  3. Now this is a very interesting photograph. The man to the right is sporting a jockstrap which was a standard design by the Bike company, which of course invented the jockstrap. Unfortunately, the focus is not good enough for me to check the tell-tale trim on the belt, which would confirm the manufacturer. The leg straps are very much further to the front of the strap and cut across the hips.

The second lad to the left is in a strap the leg straps of which are much further back, nearly upright and lie on the hip. This was the design used by the Rolls Royce of jockstraps this side of the pond, namely the Litesome. However, the elastic leg straps on a Litesome were covered in a concertinaed cotton tube, to stop the corrugated elastic used catching hairs. This strap does not have that covering and, likewise, I cannot see the belt trim. I do not think that this photograph can be British, because both are wearing baseball boots which were rarely to be seen at that point in Britain.

    1. The shoes are definitely American, but they look more like what was commonly used for basketball and other indoor gym sports in the 50s and 60s. While Bike was definitely dominant in the USA, there were some other brands around at that time.

  4. My formative years... I can't even begin to tell you how achingly beautiful this is.....

    1. Me, too . . . and those shoes brought it all home for me.

  5. Fooling around indeed. The boy on the right seems far more ready for a kiss than a punch.

    1. Nearly everyone I knew had a pair of those at one time or another.

  7. I did. The other shoe companies spread the falsehood that sneakers were bad for children's feet but every kid I knew wanted to wear Keds as much as possible, not those clumsy, clunky leather shoes we had to wear to church and school.

    1. We were allowed to wear them to school.

    2. Being "bad for children's feet" brought back memories. I wasn't aware that other companies had spread this falsehood; it was accepted fact. So in my NW Iowa school we had to keep them in our lockers and put them on only for gym class. The policy made no sense to me as kid back then. I found them quite comfortable.

    3. Jim, some of the guys at my school were still wearing Keds all the time when we began formal gym classes in 6th grade. The PE teacher made them either go barefooted or have a separate pair of Keds just for gym because the grit and gravel embedded by daily wear marred the finish of his highly polished (and prized) hardwood gym floor.

    4. The polished gym floor was prized in my school too. We were not even allowed to walk in the gym in street shoes.

  8. My experience as well That's how "sock hop" dances started, to avoid marring the gym floor with shoes
