Albert D'Anvers
This is Renoire's portrait of French composer Albert D'Anvers.
Speaking of those frames, one of the museum staff told me that Mr. Getty had in some cases acquired paintings in their original frames, adding to the provenance of the collection.
Jerry, thank you for the reference to 'Luncheon of the Boating Party'. I'm totally ignorant about most art (being a geeky IT nerd). I love the beefy guy in that painting. Thank you so much also, Pat, for sharing the information about the Ground for Sculpture rendition of it! Incroyable!
Everything about this piece just "works."
ReplyDeleteYes, it does. Renoir was a genius.
DeleteOui, un génie était Renoir.
ReplyDeleteThe elaborate frame suits the portrait à la curly-cues :)

DeleteMonsieur Getty was a most astute collector. So generous to create the Getty Museum and share his art collection :)
DeleteHe not only donated is exquisite collection, but also added enough cash to fund operations and acquisitions for many decades.
DeleteOne of my favourite artists, he created magic.
ReplyDeleteLuncheon of the Boating Party is one of my favorites, especially the two men in muscle shirts.
DeleteYou would love the life size sculpture of it here. Was there the summer before last.

DeleteYou're welcome, Brian!
DeleteYou're welcome! Amazing place, constantly changing and evolving.
DeleteOdd that he seems more famous for this painting than his compositions in the area of light opera. I was unable to resurrect any of his musical works.
ReplyDeleteFunny how fame goes.
