Ads for other publishers' work were an important part of this genre of magazine, both for their revenue and ability to generate interest. In this ad, someone called Lance Publications, Ltd. of Chicago seems to be distributing material by AMG, Bruce of LA, David of California,
and R.A. Enterprises, all of whom had their own outlets going full blast.
They also put out MANPOWER! #1 for COLT STUDIOS back in 1969, as a digest-sized magazine for $4.00. Their "LANCE" logo ran in the lower right corner of the cover.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, the magazine had a lack of focus (Cowboys! Sailors! Leathermen! College Jocks! Greek Gods!) and a bad layout that jammed too many images frustratingly cropped to fragments into a 5 1/2" X 8 1/2" page-- Jim French's beautiful "Rip Colt" drawings particularly suffered-- all of which suggested a one-off "dry run" put out by other hands before COLT took the reins and published their own magazines.
There was also a "LANCE LTD. presents" ad similar to the one above in this magazine, featuring four publications: DOUBLE EXPOSURE #1 (again teaming AMG with Bobco), CHAMPIONS ALL #3 (CHAMPION models Scott Manley & Fred Frandac), PAT ROCCO'S MALE FILM REVIEW (photos and reviews), and ROMANS I (described as the continuing of Pat Milo's work by "Romans Studio" after his death, with never-released photos of Don Hawksley and others).
MANPOWER! #1 is a great little artifact, but its contents needed a much better presentation in a larger, full-sized magazine that presented the images in their entirety. Hopefully, the other publications from LANCE were better presentations of the work.
