Early 20th Century German Art, Part 2 - the Graphic Art of Sascha Schneider

This rather intense looking man was Sascha Schneider (1870-1927), a gay German graphic artist who flouted both artistic and social conventions of his time.  Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, he was educated at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts.  He bravely contributed articles to the first known homosexual publication, Der Eigene, a fact often overlooked by modern gay art historians.  Schneider's work is often homoerotic, and he founded a body building institute at one point that he used as a source for models.  So our Friday night art lesson is all about Sascha.
