Schneider had a lucrative job as an illustrator and cover artist for the German pulp fiction writer Karl May. This is the cover for "Through Wild Kurdistan," an adventure story. You may never have heard of May, but he remains to this day the best selling German language author of all time, having sold 210,000,000 volumes during his career in the late 19th and early 20th Century. Apparently May did not object to Schneider's use of nudity and near nudity. Probably helped increase sales.

ReplyDeleteZweifellos haben sich der Schriftsteller May und der Kunstler Schneider gegenseitig inspiriert.
