Arthur Thompson included this in his 1915 guide to anatomy for art students.
I've seen this before, and it was apparently to accentuate the differences between the left and right sides in the back muscles. It's basically showing two aspects in one picture.
The musculature shows well, but I wonder why only one arm is raised.
