In August, 1898 the Roughriders were moved to a yellow fever quarantine camp on Long Island. Within weeks Teddy Roosevelt was offered and accepted the Republican nomination for Governor of New York. He campaigned vigously on his war record, but only won by a single percentage point. In a preview of his national policies, he worked for civil service reform, corporate responsibility, conservation, and public health. Above and below are gubernatorial photo portraits.
