To the nines

Remember when men dressed up for New Years?  This charming work is by Joseph Christian Leyendecker, an early 20th C. artist whose work predates and is said to have inspired that of Norman Rockwell.  Leyendecker was gay, and used his lover, Charles Beech, as a model.  Look for a series on this very talented and interesting man soon.

    1. That song came to mind when I saw this picture! They look like characters from a 30s-40s movie.

    2. That song is perfect, Dee. And B.D., I think this is from about 1920, if not earlier. Maybe Calorman will date it for us. He's our go-to guy on such matters.

  2. When people made an effort to dress up. Charming is the right word for this. I've come across Leyendecker's work before - maybe on this site too - and really like it so look forward to the forthcoming series.

    1. If you've seen Leyendecker's work here, it was likely in relation to his underwear ads and wasn't labeled as his. He knew how to draw drop dead sexy men with clothes on.
