Rower Close-up
This is cropped from a group photo of college rowers, early 20th C., I think.
Yes, rather oddly, rowing shorts were always very, very low on hips. I think it may have been to avoid constriction in the abdominal area when seated, which could hypothetically provoke a hernia. The Warwickshire University rowers, famous for their full frontal nude charity calendars, are doing more than dares. Many rowers went naked from the inception of the sport well into the last century, so they are keeping a a tradition alive. The annual Oxford and Cambridge boat race starts at Putney - formerly in Surrey, now Greater London - and ends at Chiswick (the "W" is silent). Just North of Putney Bridge there are any number of boat houses where teams come to train on that stretch of the Thames. There's no nudity these days but a decided interest in the next best thing, Lycra. One can pass a very pleasant afternoon sitting in the shade on one of the benches along the towpath. It's so picturesque...

ReplyDeleteIf someone hasn't mentioned all this in a tourist guide, they should. Fascinating!
