The one and only Bernarr Macfadden (born Bernard Adolphus McFadden), in Michelangelo's "David" pose. He was the founder of Physical Culture Magazine, and writer of over 100 books. An eccentric character with eccentric ideas of healthy living and lifestyle, who shunned any medical intervention from doctors considering all of them to be "quacks." Two of his daughters died for lack of medical attention. He ruled his wives (he went thru 4 of them) and 8 childen with an iron fist. He strongly promoted the Physical Culture lifestyle thru his publications and, later, radio and TV broadcasts. On New Years Day 1903, he led 50 men and women to the beach at Coney Island for calisthenics followed by an invigorating swim -- the beginning of the annual Coney Island Polar Bear Club. This photo is dated ca 1905, which would have made him about 37 yrs old at the time. He appears much younger in this photo.
