Today's Pick

This is my favorite of today's photos because I really like the man and the console radio.
We had one like it when I was a kid, and we could get India and South Africa on the short wave.

  1. We had a radio like that, too. My mother listened to Italian opera. But we did not have anyone like him standing around bareass nekkid. Too bad for us, eh?

    1. I'm too young. (Grandmother had a smaller radio, and a TV, albeit with a wood finish since it was the 80s. And it was Spanish or French opera, since she spoke those languages. Or French opera set in Spain: L'amour est un oiseau rebelle que nul ne put apprivoiser, et c'est bien en vain qu'on l'appelle, si'l lui convient de refuser...)

No naked guy for me either. We did have a pond on our property where my friends and I were allowed to swim (but only boys) tho.

  2. His self-confidence is such I could imagine him giving us a rendition of "I am what I am" but for the fact he's far too butch. When a boy, I was allowed an old KB (Kolster Brandes) valve set in my bedroom. Salisbury Plain is at quite an altitude and I could on occasion, when the atmospherics were advantageous, pick up the broadcasts from the New York stations of concerts from the Met on LONG WAVE. One of the most powerful transmitters for the Voice of America was on one of the Nato bases on the Plain and on Sundays, Billy Graham sounded as if he was next door. (At least is wasn't Jerry Falwell - we must always be grateful for small mercies.) Those old sets were quite something.

    1. On my first visit to Salisbury in 1988, I was surprised by all the military bases north of town on the Plain. On another visit a few years later, we found traces of even more bases that had been decommissioned. It must have been busy around there back in the day. We even found an abandoned apparatus for getting tanks across roads without tearing up the tarmac.

I never knew the VOA broadcast Billy Graham. Not surprised, mind you, just didn't know.

  3. I grew up with several friends who held dual citizenship (US/GB) because of those military bases. And that little chubby does have some major attitude going on. He's tilting his head up to hide his double chin. I can't say for certain, but I think he has a flattop too. You could get away with classifying him in both the chubby and flattop sections!

    1. LOL, Greggy! I came close on the chubby class, but didn't even think about the hairdo.
