Throwback

This unnamed work is dated 1923, and it seems a throwback to the 1880s when Jacques Lalaing was using similar photographs as studies for his sculptures.  Also, it leaves me wondering how an art auction site could know the year but the name of neither the painting nor the artist.

  1. The paleness of his body adds to the "drama" of this painting. Vague allusion to the Crucifixion?

  2. There's a signature (or something) in the lower right corner, so somebody might know who the artist is.

    1. I saw it too, but couldn't make it out even with magnification.
