Von Gloeden

I was planning a trip to Italy when Covid hit, and I'm beginning to feel the urge to travel again.  Anyway, that reminded me how much I like the work of Von Gloeden, so here are five of his works, starting with a young man at the opening of a cave.  Is that a sapling or a crude staff?

  1. It looks like it was chopped off at the bottom. I enlarged the shot, and could not see anything like roots. The model looks very serious, doesn't he? But I guess back then, posing naked was not exactly a fun event. Maybe the money was good.

    1. I think you're right about the staff. I've always wondered how much these guys got paid myself, but have no info prior to the 1940s.

    2. With regard to the models' payment, the Wikipedia article on von Gloeden states: "Gloeden scrupulously shared the proceeds of his sales with his models. The names of some of the models are known:..." The paragraph continues to list seven models' names.

    3. Thanks, Jim. It would seem they got paid well.

    4. I wonder if the models were given copies of their modelling work? Odd to think some of them as elderly men, well into the 20th century looking at themselves as stunning nude young men.

    5. Interesting question, David. We do know that some of the 20th C. physique models were given copies of their work, but I've never seen any references of such to earlier times. That does not mean, however, that it didn't happen.
