Marine Corps knot training

When I posted this on my old tumblr seven years ago, there were mixed opinions as to whether this was photoshopped or not.  It appears to be a Navy man teaching a big group of Marines how to tie knots.  Some of the Marines are looking closely at their knots, others at the model.  "Now watch closely men, and I'll teach you how to deal with an uncooperative prisoner . . . or bunkmate."

  1. I can only imagine that recruit thinking to himself, "I didn't sign up for this." Although , I would be "excited" to be in that position...

  2. Check out all the ropes on the pillar.

“Ok boys, pair up and have a go!”

    1. Right, and there's also some more coiled up and looped on the floor.

    1. The Scouts were never like this, but then again, neither were the Marines as far as we knew until now.

    1. Looking closely, you might notice that every other object on that polished wood floor shows its *reflection* on the shiny surface below it. For instance, look at the floor below the center column with all the ropes. But there’s not even a hint of reflection beneath the bound figure.

    2. Right, there's just a sort of light colored blur.

  5. I am pretty sure this is altered. Nudity would not be required for this kind of training

  6. I did some research into this image and discovered that it is a photo montage created by the artist Jane Hammond in 2007. It is reproduced in an article in the photo magazine Aperture in the Summer 2008 issue. Her source image was a picture postcard titled "Marlinspike Instruction" and you can find several examples for sale on ebay. It is interesting to compare the two images and see what she changed and what she left alone!
