No clue
Other than the fact that the model seems to be holding up a large rock,
I don't have a clue as to what is actually supposed to be going on here.
This photo is in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, but their description does not shed any light on what's going on: "Untitled (Male Nude) c. 1890-1910 Artist/maker unknown, American or European."
In this companion photo in the Philadelphia Museum of art https://philamuseum.org/collection/object/112807, the model is holding something up in the air that has to be the platform that he's perched on in your photo. It looks like stone steps in your photo, but in the companion photo it's clearly hollow, made of wood and coated to make it look like stone. So I think we can say that the rock that he's holding is not a real rock, either.
You have to admit, this pose is unique, to say the least.
ReplyDeleteIndeed!
DeleteAmazing. Is he actually lying on the ground?
ReplyDeleteI thought so, too, for a bit, but the more I look, the more I doubt it. All I can say for certain is that the rock is likely fake.
DeleteVery odd. Yes, paper mache rock?

ReplyDeleteThanks, Larry! While we still don't know the whole story, we at least know more than before.
