U.S. Navy 1917
These U.S Navy recruits from 1917 seem to be getting a foot inspection.
And what is that messy pile in the right foreground?
These are actually British naval recruits, in a photo by photographer Reinhold Thiele (he was born in Germany but moved to England). Getty Images published the photo and dated it c. 1910, but they also published two other photos obviously from the same series, dated c. 1909 and 1905. One of the other photos shows the inspector's shoulder patch is that of a petty officer in the British Navy. I'll be showing all three photos in a future post on British conscription in my blog.
