Our last item from the Kunsthistorishesmuseum is Canova's Theseus and the Centaur from 1810. While the fig leaf may be regrettable, the piece is very impressive and sited on the main entry staircase of the museum. When one starts up those steps, this work leaves no doubt that the visitor is about to enter a very special place. I took the wider view shown below for comparison.
Amazing work all around. Thank you.

DeleteOh yes, that staircase...
ReplyDeleteIf and when I ever get to Vienna this is where one will find me! The skill of these artists is always amazing to see. Thanks Jerry!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Pat. I highly recommend visiting Vienna. I was told to expect the Viennese to be somewhat stuffy, but they were friendly and helpful.
DeleteIt is on my "have yet to visit" list. One day I hope.
DeleteThanks for posting these photos, I was there over last Christmas & saw many of these items, especially the Cellini salt.
