The wood carving of Adam above is by Christof Weidlitz from about 1545. An offshoot of the religious altar making business, wood carvings became a broader art form in 16th Century Germany.
The example below is from the same decade, but by an unknown.
Adam looks a little old - paunch, leaning on a stick, careworn face…. But a remarkable carving.

ReplyDeleteI was surprised to find these full nudes, as I had previously associated wood carving from that era exclusively with church altars and furnishings.
