In many cases the daytime heat in the tropics was so intense that work was called off and servicemen retired to their bunks (unless they could dip in the ocean). There was no point in wearing clothes at those temperatures. The Imperial Japanese had an interesting item called the Bamboo Wife, a cylindrical lattice work that they could hug at night to allow cooling air to circulate around their bodies. -Dee Exx
