Plate 391
Plate 391 is one of those with a number of good, different pairings of images.
Expect to see more of this cricket batter and his muscles in future series.
This is actually plate 291, "Cricket over-arm bowling". Plate 391 is "Farmer mowing grass." Wikipedia Commons lists this as plate 391, but that's an error. The model in plate 291 is model 41, whom I have not been able to identify by name, but Muybridge referred to model 41 as "the best all-round cricketer," which suggests that cricket was being played at Penn at the time.
Quite good. Model is interesting to see. Happy to see more. Many brits brought their games here and many still play in the US today. Always interesting to come across people playing.
I did not know cricket was played here in the US.
ReplyDeleteI didn't either, but since Muybridge was English, we can see why he included it.

Well, if soccer could become popular in the USA, cricket might as well.
