Today is Troy Saxon Day, and we start the show with a dramatically lighted photo of Jimmy South. Mr. Saxon, whose real name was Stuart "Pinky" Rosenberg, started as a model on a spring break trip to California from the Midwest and then went on to be a photographer himself.
Wonderful photographic technique of a wonderful model. Great lighting. He knew what people wanted to see and made sure it was lit well.
ReplyDeleteI agree.
Deletewhat years are all these pics from?
ReplyDeleteLate 1950s and well into the 60s.
DeleteAre we sure this model isn't Saxon's other fave, Rusty Steele? Rusty and Jimmy South are very similar, but Jimmy seems leaner (and blonder) in other photos I've collected?
ReplyDeleteThey are similar, but I think this is Mr. South as I got the image from a usually well curated source.
DeleteI agree with anonymous above. Several times I've seen Rusty Steele and Jimmy South misidentified. This is Rusty Steele.
DeleteEven Mike from Male Models Vintage Beefcake:

has muddled them up in the past. He was of the opinion that they are the same model. I don't agree with that either.
Thanks, Brian. At least I'm in good company if Mike mixed them up.
DeleteI have many photos of Jimmy and Rusty and this is definitely Rusty. That said, it is a great photo of him.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the depth of research conducted here - we are saving the world!!!
ReplyDeleteWhile you may have overstated its importance a bit, I also love it when we share information.
Delete"it's what's up front that counts!"-Dee Exx
ReplyDeleteLOL!
DeleteVery studied lighting which highlights certain parts of the model!!!
ReplyDeleteRight, and as another viewer said, "up front."
DeleteThanks for posting these photos. I've liked Troy, Stuart, Pinky or whatever we want to call him, let's say the man himself, since I came across him in magazines from the 1950's/60's. Initially photos of him, then photos taken by him. Is anything more know about him? Is he still with us, what did he do with his life etc. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteAll I know about him is that he was a college student who posed nude while on a spring break trip to California in the late 1950s. He took up photography himself shortly after that and was successful for a number of years. There is a Troy Saxon Studio Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/troysaxonstudio
DeleteWonder if Troy Saxon is a nom de plume? I’m thinking Troy Donahue and John Saxon - two Hollywood heartthrobs of the late 50s / early 60s…
ReplyDeleteThe real name is Stuart "Pinky" Rosenberg.
