Doryphoros


 This is a Roman copy of Polykleitos's Doryphoros.

  1. Notice the tab of marble between the arm and thigh of the statue.
    The tab of marble kept in place there to insure the arm would not break off from its own weight, and yet the other arm is free….:)

    1. My layman's eye sees the unbraced arm as being the one more likely to break off. It is odd.

  2. It would be guided by a close examination of the stone as to whether bracing was needed. A thing to remember also is that these statues would be, to our eyes, rather garishly painted.
