Bouveret's use of the light in this painting is exceptional.  Interestingly, this model 
appears in a number of contemporaneous  paintings and academic drawings 
by quite a few different artists.  Not hard to see why he was popular.

  1. I've seen this one several times before but, with that superb lighting it always gives me a sense of drama. He appears to be looking at a piece of sawn wood? An excellent prop..

    As you say the lighting is exceptional.
    Reminds me of the auction held at the former home of Rudolf Nureyev in Paris,
    Nureyev was a collector of male nudes of the academic style.
