Boxer Sugar Ray Robinson in a 1955 photo by LIFE photographer Gray Villet.
Interestingly, Sugar Ray removed his shorts to make weight, but left his socks on.
It's not always a cheap shot when a naked man is photographed still wearing his socks. Sugar Ray Robinson was guarding against the dreaded verucca, the blight of the locker room floor. (I was taken out for a whole season when I was running.) Besides, they look very good quality wool. This shot is beautifully choreographed. Everyone is looking up without saying "cheese".

ReplyDeleteYes, foot fungus was and still is a problem in locker rooms.
