Marcus Aurelius is the subject of this fine piece in the Hermitage Museum.
Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (121–180) was Roman emperor from 161 to 180. He was a Stoic and a philosopher. Members of the patrician class of his time were bearded in Greek fashion. Marcus Aurelius penned twelve books of his Stoic Meditations (Τὰ εἰς ἑαυτόν - Ta eis heauton - "things to one's self") in Greek which have stood the test of time and remain perennially popular and among few of the works to have been in print for nearly two millennia. I keep a copy on my bedside table.
Wow..this is great..I like the combination of showing off one's manhood yet sort of clothed..
ReplyDeleteYes, I think that conceptual contradiction adds to the drama.
