Drew Burton (right) and Paul strand show off their tan lines poolside. Bruce must have really liked these two since he did numerous photos of them. I can certainly see why.
I have a colour photograph in this series with Paul Strand taken by Bruce Bellas by the pool in his garden. Drew Burton was not a prolific poser and I have never seen an image of him strapped or even in trunks, and so I assume his modelling days post-dated the ban on full-frontal male photography.
Drew was from Philadelphia, in 1973 he came out to California where he met Strand through a mutual friend. Strand had already been a model for Bruce and convinced Drew to meet with him. He agreed to pose for Bruce solo and with Strand. The studio photos were done first and the outdoor photos were done last in that summer of 73. Drew has stated that Bruce was professional and easy to work with. Drew also stated Bruce was open to sex with his models if they so chose, Drew only posed and felt both thrilled and liberated doing so for Bruce, he even posed with a hard on to please Bruce. He told of Bruce’s relief of the relaxation of censorship that allowed for frontal nudity and public acceptance. Like many in the physique photo world, Drew was shocked to learn of Bruce’s death the following year. Drew also posed for Lou Thomas and performed in a solo video several years later. Drew is/was a long time resident of Washington DC, perhaps the kept man of a US Senator as some jokingly say of physique models who lived there. Rex in DC
