Cuyer 1890
This photo by Edouard Cuyer was published in 1890 in a book called "Artistic Anatomy."
An antique photography expert from Aberystwyth University told me years ago about the blanching of body hair in 19th C. photos. He said it was sometimes the flash, sometimes exposure, and sometimes developing processes . . . or some combination thereof.
All rather mysterious. Including what seems to be an invisible walking stick.
ReplyDeleteOr maybe an invisible dagger or sword? Also, I just noticed that he probably worked outdoors fully clothed, as only his hands and face are tanned.
DeleteOh yes, once you see it, quite notable. Also apparently smooth, or an artefact of the photographic methods...but huge natural bush.
