Friday Art by Allyn Cox

Allyn Cox (1896-1982) is best known for his historical murals, including some in the U.S. Capitol.
One of his techniques to add realism to his work was to sketch the models nude and add clothing to the final version of a mural.  In this example he even went anatomical on the side.

  1. Great stuff. Presumably the anatomical details taken from a lean muscular model? Already knowing your anatomy from past studies then applying the under skin partly structural details from a living model is quite a skill.

    1. I have learned so much from your comments, that I was actually excited to find this drawing. I felt like I deeply understood it.

  2. In one modelling session, the tutor got out a large anatomical diagram and got me to to rotate and twist my arms to show off the various structures beneath. Quite fascinating. Although very averagely built and with layers of fat with the right positioning it was possible to observe loads of detail.

    1. Well, we're all sometimes surprised by what can be done when the situation calls for it. Glad you were a useful teaching example.
