Tintype?
This looks like it might be a tintype from the 1850s.
Despite the poor quality, this is a personal favorite.
Probably my favourite from this series too. So early, yet we can see clearly see his left eye. Every life model has done that pose. Great sense of affinity, thank you.
The scratches are a fairly common occurance with tintypes. It has something to do with the emusion being a thin layer riding on a metal surface. We have one from 1850 in our family photo collection and had to go to some expensive lengths to preserve it.
